You Don’t Have to Do the PhD Alone: Join the Global PhD Meditation Group for support and compassion. Enhance your research journey while prioritising your wellbeing with weekly meditation.
Somewhere between the literature review and the final draft, many researchers notice the same thing: the work can be solitary, the pressure is significant, and the mind rarely switches off. Nobody warns you that a PhD asks as much of your inner life as it does of your intellect.

The Global PhD Meditation Group is a place to pause. We are looking for people just like you to take part in the first stage of this exciting project. Join us for one hour a week with other researchers from around the world. We will meet online every Thursday at 6 pm (UK time) for a guided compassion meditation. We welcome beginners in their first year finding their feet, more experienced hands writing up and running on fumes, and everyone in between. Some are simply curious. All are welcome.
There is no performance here and nothing to get right. You turn up, you settle, and you practise alongside people who understand some of the things you are working with.
What we practise
The group practises nondual compassion meditation. It is secular and open to people of any belief or none, but rooted in traditional Buddhist methods that have been refined over centuries. The approach has one aim: to increase happiness, wellbeing and success. Dr Stephen has taught meditation to higher-education students for over twenty years. The method has been shaped, session by session, around what doctoral researchers actually need: steadier focus, kinder self-talk, relief from isolation, and a sense of perspective when the project feels too big.
Why it matters for your research
Wellbeing is not a distraction from academic success. It underpins it. Candidates who can regulate stress, return to the present moment and treat themselves with compassion tend to find it easier to start the difficult chapter, stay with the problem and finish. The group gives you regular practice at all three, in good company.
Compassion for you, me and everyone
The ethos of PhD Thriving is that solutions should benefit both the individual and the wider community. In the group, you receive support, and you offer it simply by being there. Many experienced practitioners of compassion practice describe the quiet sense of belonging as a valuable part of the experience.
