The Global PhD Meditation Group?

Compassion for You, Me and Everyone

The ethos of PhD Thriving rests on nondual compassion; we offer solutions that benefit the individual and society. The Global PhD Meditation Group brings together people who are looking to overcome their own challenges and who wish to support others in doing the same. We practice a simple compassion meditation that is secular but based on traditional Buddhist methods. Its sole aim is to increase happiness, wellbeing and success. We currently meet once a week on Thursdays at 6 pm (UK time). All are welcome, but registration for our free newsletter is required. The Newsletter is where we publish details of how to access the PhD Meditation Group and the practice schedule. The meditation is guided in English, and attendance is limited by technical constraints. The Group is supported by a PhD Meditation Project, which aims, over time, to ensure everyone who wants to can attend, to offer the meditation in different languages, to ensure the project is self-sustaining, and eventually train more teachers in the nondual compassion method to allow for in-person and online groups to meet demand.

Why A PhD Meditation Group?

First things first. For over 20 years, Dr Stephen has been running meditation groups supporting students in higher education, including post-graduates. Over time, the methods taught to PhD groups evolved to more closely meet their needs in both funded and community groups. There is some evidence that nondual compassion meditation is one of the most effective for Westernised secular practice:

University students, in general, and PhD candidates in particular, are under increasing pressure and often feel socially isolated and unsupported. Nondual compassion meditation helps students to boost their happiness, wellbeing and success. Of all the mindtraining techniques I share, nondual meditation is the most effective in helping students achieve a thriving mental state. In the current climate, there is a clear and pressing need to provide high-quality nondual meditation opportunities to as many students as wish to practice it.

The Global PhD Meditation Project

Having established a need for nondual meditation, the next question is how to create a framework that delivers the opportunity for nondual compassionate practice to all who would like to participate; this is the purpose of the Global PhD Meditation Project. The Project is developing structures to:

  • Increase the number of platforms used to deliver the meditation, so more students can participate.
  • To provide support in different languages.
  • Make the project sustainable and self-funding.
  • Train more teachers in the nondual compassion method.
